What is a product design invention?

There are many definitions for product design, but I've been calling new products: inventions.
Product Design that solves problems, in a new way.
With the help of patents this can be a very safe career goal.
Product design should use mechanisms that are better than all existing ways, for the sake of the customers they serve.
Competition is nice, but in product design: we all want to win; so we make the best inventions, and sell them to our customers... as the best solution for their problem.

The best product design inventions come from:
the best ideas+ product design+ competitor analysis.
An awareness of the industry's competitors can help a product designer to design the products that are better than all others.
Because with product design, the best inventions are those that solve a problem, better than all other options.
Product Design is entirely about customer satisfaction.
As humans, we're constantly seeking to upgrade, maintain, or repair our quality of life. Product design helps us do this.

The Best Product Design Inventions

Product Design suits the needs of each customer, who has a unique personality that influences how they prefer to shop; and how they prefer to use products.
The situation each product designer is faced with is also important.
The best product design solutions are most appropriate, and they make every other option feel relatively inadequate.

In product design, who decides what's best?

In product design, the customers are always the ones making us please them aesthetically and functionally.
Imagine profitable product design as a shelf at your favorite Hardware store:
There are a variety of screwdrivers to choose from, but you and almost everyone else has a preference. We want to feel bestwhen product design is involved.

Humans appreciate when product designs are best:
What is the Best Product Design?
  • More efficient
  • Easier to use
  • Ready to use
  • Easy to manufacture
  • Convenient to own
  • Ultra portable
  • Extra durable
  • Autonomous
  • Less parts = more simple
  • Extra storage
  • Cheaper to import
  • More adaptability

New mechanisms and multiple situations allow for more viable inventions to exist in product design.
In product design, the where, when, why, and how factors all cooperate to decide what sells.

The idea of the Best Product Designs
  • the fastest mechanisms
  • the quietest
  • most convenient to use
  • the most comfortable
  • The most intuitive
  • pocket sized versions
  • Industrial applicability
  • the best manufacturing prices
  • the most reliable mechanism
  • lightweight = affordable shipping.
In product design, combining these qualities in a singular product, allows that one product, to differentiate itself from the competition… Very, very, very well.
Here's a famous product design solution, and how the product design problem was viewed:

Product Design solves products, often with inventions. We use these tools to provide a better quality of life for the consumers.

Product Design uses intellectual properties to make your products and your profits more secure.

All intellectual properties are meant to isolate your creations, from outsiders trying to profit from your creations. They are certified by one or more regional governing bodies.

Product Design Inventions use patents, and are approved by the “Patent Offices” of the countries you apply for protection in.

Brand designers use trademarks to protect their logo and brand name.

Copyrights protect artworks from plagiarism and theft.

They log the internationally accessible list of inventions, into their databases… whereby historically accurate records of our product design works exist.
These are to protect our designs in court and from other legal disputes.

USA has a strong economy, and leads the western hermishere in patent law.

Product designers need to know all about their the products they design, from multiple angles. Your overall perspective alters the quality of the inventions you produce.

You need to know: who, what, when, how and why.
Your customers should expect that much.

Utility Patents are the best patents for product design inventions, and show its information in the correct order, with mechanisms and parts being claimed very generally, while the words are written scoped abs precisely enough to distinguish the invention's purpose and benefits.

Product Design from today's modern perspective, uses these types of utility patents:
  • Methods of Manufacturing
  • Software Programs
  • Tangible Inventions
  • Methods for ” Using Things”

Utility Patent Claims explain the Functions, in this order:

Decide upon the ideal product design characteristics for your invention.

Imagine the structure of the device that can most ergonomically store and operate the components’ mechanism(s).

Assemble a list of the 4 main components, that create, trigger, or allow these characteristic features.
Linguistically reduce the components to 4 essential parts for your utility patent’s independent claims.

Couple these parts to their functions.

Add all other beneficial components, as dependent claims.

Describe these parts, in the same sequence they're structurally assembled.

Method of Manufacturing Patents
Patents are granted for procedures that allow us to make any product, in a new and unexpectedly improved way.
These products may be your new invention, or even one or more existing products…
Your methods are what these utility patents protect.

Functional Invention Patents
The structure of your new device, plus each associated function, may be granted a utility patent.
It must be new in its industry categories.
Only the device coupled to its solution oriented abilities, will be protected.
It's mechanism of action, not its looks… are important.

Software Invention Patents
Software inventions must:
Initiate a unique sequence of digital events;
Use programming to control at least part of an electronic device;
Achieve a useful result, in an innovative way; and
Mention the required hardware in its patent claims.

Method of Use Patents
Patents are granted for procedures that allow us to make any product, in a new and unexpectedly improved way.
These products may be your new invention, or even one or more existing products…
Your methods are what these utility patents protect.

Need to write your own Patents?
Read “Patent it yourself”.
It’s written by a retired senior patent examiner. That’s many years of experience.
When you submit a patent, the patent examiner reads it. It is always double checked, and approved, by a senior patent examiner… that is David Pressman, the author of this book.

Need money from your inventions/ideas?
Stephen Key runs “Invent Right”.
It’s an educational company that teaches creators, designers, and artists… How to monetize your ideas.
The youtube channel is phenomenally insightful.

Design Patents
for your Invention's Aesthetics

Design Patent claims
The protection from a design Patent covers the object’s appearance: How it looks.
You can own the visually new aspects of your invention, using a design Patent.
The image of your invention, is what is protected here.
You can protect all its visible surfaces, some of its surfaces… or even just claim one of the many perspectives of your invention.
We use dotted lines to show the USPTO what to ignore.

Need to draw your own Design Patents?
Read “How to Make Patent Drawings”.
It’s written by a professional patent agent, and verfied by a senior patent examiner.
The patent agents are microcertified writers of utility and design patents.
The cost of a lawyer that fights in court, is higher than the specialist that only writes and files patent applications.
US patent examiners are still certified lawyers, that have passed the bar and chosen to examine patents, instead of writing them.
